<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the past two years, officials and teams from Formula 1 have negotiated to come up with a new set of regulations for the 2021 racing season. Among the many updates made to the Formula 1 2021 technical regulations is the approval of two additive manufacturing metal powders developed by Colorado-based Elementum 3D, A6061-RAM1 and A2024-RAM2.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two high-strength aluminum alloys are compatible with additive manufacturing and boast superior performance compared to traditionally wrought alloys. Elementum 3D, which works at the cutting edge of AM material development, looking at metals, ceramics and composites, adapted the high-strength alloys for AM, something which had previously been challenging because of the metals’ tendency to hot tear during the solidification process, which led to compromised mechanical properties.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a record market cap, Tesla is among the automakers that are best positioned to get through the COVID-19 crisis. The recent – possibly a bit uncalled for – tweets by its exuberant CEO do not seem to be getting in the way of the company’s climb to the top of the automotive world. And the reason is that its technology is – according to experts – six to ten years ahead of competitors (this used to be true for Apple, and look where it got). Tesla is not very open about its use of AM, however in the latest Q1 financial release, the company showed a very large, generatively designed metal part that will go into its new Model Y’s.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Valentin Stamate, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.unitbv.ro/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Transilvania University of Brașov</a>, Romania, has demonstrated a prototype two-stroke engine, 3D printed in 3 different metals. Stamate believes the 3D printed engine to be the first of its kind in the world, and hopes that the production method serves to pave the way for larger 3D printed engines.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>10 rpm from 10 3D printed metal parts</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The engine is capable of achieving 10,000 revolutions per minute and is cooled by an electric motor. At 10 cubic centimeters, the engine would be able capable of propelling small model planes or, if scaled correctly, ultralight aircraft.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What do you do when you need a replacement part for one of the rarest cars in the world? Just 3D print it out of metal.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The technology of 3d metal printing is helping to save the rarest cars in the world. Restorers can reverse-engineer rare or nonexistent parts and then print them out of Inconel alloys, aluminum, stainless steel or titanium, allowing them to save and restore the rarest and most complicated machines you can think of. Be it something ancient or a brand new prototype, the sky is the limit, and although the equipment needed for the job costs a million dollars today, a small run of parts can be commissioned for under $1000 already.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ferrari is looking towards 3D printing technology in a bid to introduce an innovative piston design that could deliver a big step forward for its 2017 Formula 1 engine.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Ferrari has maintained, under the orders of president Sergio Marchionne, a strict code of silence about its hopes for the season ahead, work is progressing hard at Maranello on ensuring a much-needed step forward.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having put pressure on itself at the start of 2016 with bold declarations about winning the first race of the season, this year Ferrari&#8217;s efforts are taking place under a shroud of secrecy.</p>
