3D Printing

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), is the process of building objects one layer at a time, each layer on top of the previous, until the final object is complete rather than through molding or subtractive techniques (such as machining). 3D printing can create objects from a variety of polymer and industrial materials. These materials can come in the form of powders, filaments, liquids, or sheets.

are developed and tested on an EOS M290 metal printer. The M290 utilizes the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) additive manufacturing technique, developed by EOS. DMLS is the process of a laser fired into a bed of powdered metal, aiming the laser automatically at points in a space defined by a 3D object, melting/welding the material together to create a solid structure.

Advantages of 3D Printing

3D printing has several advantages over conventional manufacturing methods. With 3D printing, an idea can go directly from a file on a designer’s computer to a finished part or product. 3D printing can also reduce the amount of material wasted in manufacturing and create objects that are difficult or impossible to produce with traditional techniques, including objects with complex internal structures that add strength, reduce weight, or increase functionality.
