Fortius Metals and DEEP Manufacturing Advance Multi-Material Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing at Industrial Scale

Fortius Metals, a sister company of Elementum 3D, has launched a collaborative project with DEEP Manufacturing to demonstrate industrial-scale multi-material Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). The initiative will leverage DEEP Manufacturing’s advanced WAAM platform to produce a highly complex metal cylinder composed of multiple alloys, manufactured as a single continuous component using several synchronized robotic systems.

The project aims to prove that advanced alloys can be integrated into one structure while maintaining the precision, repeatability, process control, and production standards required for real-world manufacturing environments. Scheduled for completion between mid-June and early July 2026, the effort represents a significant step toward next-generation manufacturing capabilities where material properties can be strategically engineered within a single part.

“Multi-material manufacturing will help transform sectors where it’s essential that components can withstand the most demanding environments,” explains Peter Richards, CEO of DEEP Manufacturing. “However, the process isn’t simply about depositing metal. It requires extensive process knowledge and a large-scale monitoring and control system. The goal of this project is to demonstrate that it’s possible to combine these capabilities to solve the most complex problems and move towards the production stage.”

Jeph Ruppert, CEO of Fortius Metals, adds: “By combining simulation, toolpath design, and state-of-the-art wire EDM technology with a large-format printing platform, we can explore the real possibilities of complex parts. Working with DEEP Manufacturing allows us to apply our expertise in modeling and materials to a real, highly complex structure.”

At the core of the project is Fortius Metals’ portfolio of high-performance Reactive Additive Manufacturing (RAM)-based wire alloys: A2024-RAM2, A6061-RAM2, and A7075-RAM2. Engineered for reliable, crack-resistant robotic welding and wire-directed energy deposition (wire-DED), these advanced wire feedstocks deliver consistent performance across applications ranging from precision components to large-scale structural assemblies.

Fortius Metals’ broad portfolio of advanced additive manufacturing materials eliminates the long-standing need to substitute lower-strength filler metals in welding and additive processes—materials that often compromise stiffness, strength, and long-term durability. By enabling the use of high-performance aluminum alloys in demanding applications, Fortius expands design freedom while helping manufacturers achieve superior mechanical performance and greater production flexibility.
