LIFT selects Elementum 3D for Advanced Materials Challenge Program 

Elementum 3D is pleased to announce its collaborative project with LIFT. LIFT is a nonprofit, public-private partnership between industry, academia and government that supports our nation’s economy and enhances its national security by accelerating innovative advanced manufacturing technology and talent development.

As an Advanced Materials Challenge Program Awardee, the Elementum 3D team will be working closely with LIFT to develop next-generation alloys for additive manufacturing that leverage Elementum 3D’s patented reactive additive manufacturing (RAM) technology. The LIFT team will directly support this project work with their advanced materials modeling and manufacturing capabilities.

We are honored to help expand the nation’s advanced manufacturing and national security capabilities through the development of these innovative printable alloys.

Elementum 3D recognized by Colorado School of Mines in record breaking fundraising initiative 

Elementum 3D was recognized this month for contributed resources and learning opportunities valued over $1 million to Colorado School of Mines historic MINES@150 fundraising effort. The school raised $589 million in under 5 years to support their new Entrepreneurship & Innovation Ecosystem, signature student experiences, scholarships, endowed chairs and more.

The strategic partnership between Elementum 3D and Colorado School of Mines have benefited each other through the advancement of AM material research and development and hands-on experience for students and professors. Two notable joint projects include an Army STTR and Navy SBIR, both had a Phase I and Phase II stage.

“We are honored to be recognized as a MINES@150 donor. Many of the successes Elementum 3D have achieved since it was established in 2014 are directly related to the Colorado School of Mines teachers, students, and programs.” said Dr. Jacob Nuechterlein, Elementum 3D founder and CEO. Jacob concludes “I am proud to be a Mines graduate.”

The Colorado School of Mines’ most successful fundraising initiative in the university’s 150-year history was publicly launched in the fall of 2020 and closed on June 30, 2025. All visionary donors who contributed $1 million or more via monetary or in-kind services to the MINES@150 campaign were invited to attend the plaque unveiling commemorating the momentous achievement.

Patrick Callard earned a B.B.A. in advertising from Western Michigan University in 1990. He provides over 30 years of experience in marketing communications, new business development and market outreach.
He has managed multiple marketing projects and budgets for a variety of services and products.

Patrick also successfully grew an IT consulting business from a two-man basement business to a profitable eight employee business in 4-years. Patrick’s daily focus is to unify customer experience, brand purpose, creative communication, and marketing technology to drive the growth of the business.

Tyler’s message will key on blown powder Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED) for AM and repair and why this process is being realized by industry as one of the key pillars in printing thin wall part structures and large part envelope requirements.

Shawn will reveal how Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM) is producing high resolution, high performance technical ceramics that can serve a wide range of applications and structural materials, such as alumina, zirconia, and silicon nitride. He will also touch on how LCM has progressed into multi-material components incorporating ceramics and metals.

Jeff’s presentation will focus on the advances in wire DED, including welding processes for wire DED (arc, laser, and e-beam), next-generation alloys for large format metal 3D printing, and use cases that can benefit from replacing large forgings, replacing large machined billets, and producing advanced tooling — enabling next generation designs.

Dr. Jacob Nuechterlein

President/Founder Elementum 3D

Dr. Jacob Nuechterlein is the founder and president of Elementum 3D in Erie, CO. He earned his Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy at the Colorado School of Mines. Jacob has been researching, teaching, or consulting on topics such as casting and powder metallurgy for the last 14 years. Elementum 3D’s work with powder bed laser additive manufacturing is based on these principles. In addition, is thesis work in thermodynamics and formation kinetics of metal matrix composites is directly related to all 3D printing processes.
